William Temple Hornaday
Hornaday, William Temple (1854–1937), a United States naturalist. He was active in promoting game preserves and laws for the protection of wildlife. His leadership helped save the American buffalo (bison) from extinction.
Hornaday was born in Plainfield, Indiana, grew up in Iowa, and attended Iowa State Agricultural College. He accompanied various collecting expeditions to South America, Asia, and the American West. He was chief taxidermist for the U.S. National Museum, 1882–90, and directed the New York Zoological Park, 1896–1926.
His books include: The American Natural History (1904); The Extermination of the American Bison (1887); Taxidermy and Zoological Collecting (1891); Minds and Manners of Wild Animals (1922); Thirty Years' War for Wild Life (1931).
