United States Geological Survey

United States Geological Survey, an agency of the Department of the Interior. Its main functions are to appraise the nation's mineral and water resources and to survey and map the country's physical features. The agency also collects, analyzes, and publishes seismic data on earthquakes, volcanoes, and nuclear explosions. The Geological Survey was established in 1879.
