Lodge, Sir Oliver

Lodge, Sir Oliver (Joseph) (1851-1940), a British physicist chiefly noted for his investigations of electromagnetic waves and for his contributions to the development of wireless communication. In his later years, Lodge attempted to reconcile science and religion. A spiritualist, he conducted psychic experiments and claimed to have communicated with his dead son Raymond.

Lodge graduated from University College, London, in 1877. He was a professor at University College, Liverpool, 1881-1900, and principal of Birmingham University, 1900-19. He was knighted in 1902. His autobiography is Past Years (1931).
