Gamow, George
Gamow, g'mou, George (1904-1968), a Russian-American physicist and author. Gamow was noted for his theoretical research on the evolution of stars and the creation of the chemical elements. He was a leading author of science books for the general public and popularized the theory that the universe was created by a big bang. Gamow received a Ph.D. from the University of Leningrad in 1928. He came to the United States in 1934 and became a citizen in 1940. Gamow taught at George Washington University from 1934 until 1956, when he joined the faculty of the University of Colorado.
His books include Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland (1939); One, Two, Three... Infinity (1947); A Planet Called Earth (1963); A Star Called the Sun (1964); and Thirty Years That Shook the World: the Story of Quantum Theory (1966).
