Bose, Sir Jagadis Chandra

Bose, Sir Jagadis Chandra (or Chunder) (1858-1937), an Indian physicist and plant physiologist. He invented the crescograph, a device making it possible to observe the growth of plants. Bose attended St. Xavier's College, Calcutta (now Kolkata), and Cambridge University. He was professor of physics at Presidency College, Calcutta (1885-1915). Bose founded and was director of the Bose Research Institute in Calcutta. He investigated the refraction of light rays and developed many sensitive research instruments. He was knighted in 1917.
