Edward Williams Morley
Morley, Edward Williams (1838-1923), a United States chemist. Morley was born in Newark, New Jersey. He received an M.A. from Williams College in 1863 and was professor of natural history and chemistry at Western Reserve University, 1869-1906. Morley helped Albert A. Michelson to develop the interferometer, and to perform the Michelson-Morley experiment, which caused physicists to abandon the ether theory. He also made many precise measurements of the properties of gases.
