Yom Kippur Craft for Kids
Yom Kippur means "The Day of Atonement" or "Day of Covering." It is the holiest day of the Jewish Year and occurs on the 10th day of Tishri. During Yom Kippur, members of the Jewish faith fast, repent, and ask God for forgiveness. One way to prepare for this day is to make a Chai charm. This ancient tradition is easy to accomplish by following a few easy steps.
To make a Chai Charm for Yom Kippur, you'll need the following materials:Self-hardening clay
Sandpaper
Pencil
Craft stick
Gold or silver paint
Paintbrush
Clear varnish or nail polish
Thin leather cord
In ancient times, many Jewish people cut stones to make seals for traders, farmers, and merchants. They also cut stones to make charms to wear around the neck or wrist.
You can practice an ancient tradition and make a Chai charm. Chai is the symbol for life and is a traditional New Year's symbol. To make your charm, roll a piece of self-hardening clay into a ball and flatten it to the size of a half dollar. Poke a hole at the top for the cord.
Lightly trace the Chai symbol onto one side of the clay. With a craftstick, carefully shape the clay around this symbol so that the Chai is slightly raised up from the rest of the clay. Let the clay dry.
Paint the Chai with gold or silver paint. When dry, coat the charm with clear varnish. Thread a thin leather cord through the hole, and wear your charm for a lucky life.
