How Scented Lamps Work
Scented lamps fill your home with gentle fragrances, give rooms a cozy glow and eliminate odors all at the same time. These stylish lamps, which often resemble decorative bottles, not only smell great, but also add a chic finishing touch to any decor.
Warm the Stone
Fragrance lamps use a form of combustion to bring in warm and cold air, releasing oxygen and scents via the lamp’s stone. They have a wick that must be lit to warm the stone, which sends the scent into your room just a few minutes after lighting.
No Flame
Unlike candles, you don’t need to leave the wick burning – in fact, you shouldn’t. Blow it out after about two minutes, which is enough time to warm the stone. The warmed stone will keep the wick emitting fragrance, until either the stone cools off or you put the lid on the lamp to close off the fragrance. It’s a good idea to let the lamp run out of fuel once in a while, as it keeps the stone healthy -- and be careful not to touch the stone, since it will be hot.
Replacing the Wick
The fragrance in the lamp lives in the wick, and you can change the scent by soaking the wet wick in a new fragrance – you won’t need a new wick. Unlike other warming scents, we don’t recommend trying DIY scents for lamps, and you should never mix two scents together – the high alcohol content might react poorly.
Neutral Fragrance
Many scented lamp manufacturers create a neutral fragrance that is great for eliminating cooking odors so you can have your home ready for a party without overwhelming your guests’ senses. Running the neutral fragrance through the lamp a few times a year is also recommended to clean the lamp and keep it smelling fresh no matter which fragrance you choose.
