GERD Diagnosis: Symptoms, Tests, and What to Expect

How can I be sure I have GERD?

How can I be sure I have GERD?

Your doctor will begin by asking questions about your symptoms. Often, he or she can diagnose and prescribe treatment based on your symptom history alone. If further testing is necessary, the most common procedures are:

  • upper GI endoscopy
  • barium swallow
  • Bernstein, or acid perfusion, test
  • 24-hour pH, or stomach acid, monitoring

Your doctor will ask many questions and perform a physical exam. Be prepared to talk with your doctor about your symptoms, medical history, other health problems, and any medications you are currently taking.
