What are the warning signs of stroke?

If atherosclerosis blocks an artery leading to your brain, depriving it of oxygen, you may have a stroke. If you suddenly have any of these symptoms, it may be a warning sign of stroke, so get immediate emergency medical care:

  • confusion or trouble understanding or remembering
  • dizziness, lightheadedness, loss of balance, loss of coordination, or problems walking
  • loss of consciousness
  • numbness, tingling, or weakness in your face, arm, or leg, especially if it's on only one side of your body
  • severe headache for no apparent reason
  • trouble seeing from one or both eyes
  • trouble speaking
