Howard University
Howard University, a private, nonsectarian, coeducational institution in Washington, D.C., partially supported by government funds. The predominantly black school is open to all students; usually about 15 per cent of the enrollment is from foreign countries. The university has 16 undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, including law, dentistry, and one of the four medical schools in the United States that are primarily for the training of black physicians. Howard was chartered by the U.S. Congress in 1867. It was founded largely through the efforts of General Oliver O. Howard, for whom it is named. He served as the school's president, 1869–73.
