James Harrod
Harrod, James (1724–1793), an American frontiersman. He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and fought in the French and Indian War before he was 20. In 1773 Harrod accompanied a party down the Ohio River as far as the site of Louisville, Kentucky. The next year he returned with a party of 30 men and began the first permanent settlement in Kentucky, later named Harrodsburg. He fought in many battles against the Indians, and in 1779 was elected to the Virginia legislature.
