Geography of Morristown
Morristown, New Jersey, a town and the seat of Morris County. It is on the Whippany River, 18 miles (29 km) west-northwest of downtown Newark. Drugs and paper are among the main products.
Morristown was settled about 1710. Its Speedwell Ironworks served the patriot cause in the Revolutionary War. In 1837–38 the ironworks was the site of the experiments in telegraphy of Samuel F. B. Morse and Alfred Vail, son of the owner.
Nearby Morristown National Historical Park includes a reconstruction of Fort Nonsense, an earthwork built in 1777 when George Washington and his troops were quartered in the town; the Ford Mansion, which served as Washington's headquarters in the winter of 1779–80; and Jockey Hollow, containing troop campsites and reconstructed army buildings. The home of the cartoonist Thomas Nast is a national historic landmark.
