Raphael Holinshed

Raphael Holinshed

Holinshed, Raphael (?–1580?), an English chronicler. Early in the reign of Elizabeth I he began work with Reginald Wolfe, a printer who was compiling a history of the world. Holinshed continued the project after Wolfe died in 1573. It was published as Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland (1577). Holinshed wrote the history and William Harrison the description of England. Most of the rest was adapted or translated. Shakespeare found his plots for Macbeth, the historical plays, and parts of other plays in the Chronicles.
