Kalmuck
Kalmuck, or Kalmuk, the name of a Mongolian people. In the 17th century the Kalmucks migrated from China to the Lower Volga region of Russia. In the late 18th century most of them returned to China. Those who remained kept their ancient way of life, living in tents and raising herds of cattle, horses, and sheep. They also kept their religion, Lamaist Buddhism. After World War II the Soviet government deported the Kalmucks to Central Asia for aiding the Germans.
