Aspasia

Aspasia, (470?–410 B.C.), the mistress of Pericles, ruler of Athens. She was noted for her beauty and wit. Aspasia was probably a native of Miletus, in Asia Minor. Pericles left his wife to live with her, but could not be married to her because of his own law forbidding the marriage of Athenians with foreigners. Their home was a meeting place of intellectual leaders.
