Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima, a Japanese island that was the scene of a bloody World War II battle. It is in the Pacific Ocean, 760 miles (1,223 km) south of Tokyo. The island, covering eight square miles (21 km2), is dominated by Mount Suribachi (548 feet [167 m]). Iwo Jima was a Japanese air base that in 1945 fell to the United States, which returned it in 1968.
