The luxurious Porsche 928 matured into one of the world's best grand touring cars.
Porsche's first V-8 production car bowed in Europe in 1977, and came to America the following year. Like the 924, the Porsche 928 broke with Porsche tradition in having a water-cooled front engine. Styled largely by American Tony Lapine, the 928 was burly and luxurious, yet its new all-aluminum 4.5-liter V-8 was as innovative as any Porsche engine.

1978-1982 Porsche 928 Pictures and Specifications
The Porsche 928 was a combination of great luxury and incredible performance. It debuted in 1978 as one of the most expensive cars in the Porsche line. The 928 was a startling departure from the performance-driven 911, but was no less patiently and meticulously honed over the years.
Initial U.S. horsepower for the Porsche 928 was a stout 220.
The Porsche 928's front engine drove a rear transaxle via a flexible propshaft.
The Porsche 928 boasted an aluminum 4.5-liter V-8 engine.

1983-1992 Porsche 928S and 928S 4 Pictures and Specifications
A hotter Porsche 928S went on sale in Europe in 1980, but America didn't get the more potent 234-bhp engine until 1982, along with a new four-speed automatic transmission. The Porsche 928S 4 proved its mettle by reaching a top speed of 172 mph in Utah in 1986, making it the fastest production car on the road.
With its 5.0-liter V-8, the 1985 Porsche 928S hit 60 mph in under 6 seconds.
New flat-face wheels identified the 1985 Porsche 928S externally.
The Porsche 928S had a rich and comfortable interior with leather upholstery.

1993-1995 Porsche 928 GTS Pictures and Specifications
The Porsche 928 started the 1993 season early when Porsche released new GTS models in spring '92. The big news was a V-8 stoked to 5.4 liters and 345 U.S. horsepower. Appearance was subtly altered with a reshaped rear wing, broader rear track, and wider rolling stock. Performance was little changed, however, and worldwide sales were down to just over 600 units.
The fantastic Porsche 928 GTS was a fitting conclusion to the 928 line.
The Porsche 928 GTS saw little change in its swan-song year, 1995.
