1968 Dodge Coronet R/T 440
New sheet metal and a budget performance Coronet were the big news for Dodge’s 1968 intermediates. The 117-inch wheelbase was retained, but the all-new body gained a flowing new roofline, a new grill, and rear fenders that swelled around the wheelwells then tapered to a create a modest spoiler effect at the tail. Dual “bumblebee” stripes to encircle the tail were optional.

The 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T 440 was marketed under the new Scat Pack performance umbrella. A hood bulge was added, but instrumentation was virtually standard-issue Coronet.
Again offered as a hardtop or convertible, the R/T continued as Coronet’s best-equipped high-performance choice. The seat design was new and optional color-keyed headrests could be fitted to both front and rear seats. R/T powertrains were unchanged, with the 440 Magnum standard and the 426 Hemi an option.
Air conditioning was available only on the 440-engine car and only with the TorqueFlite automatic trans. Once again, Dodge didn’t advertise the 440-cubic-inch displacement on the car’s exterior; only the R/T badges and a new-for-’68 hood bulge were telltales.
The only other Coronet on which the hood bulge appeared was the new Super Bee. This was a stripper Coronet two-door sedan that came standard with the 335-horsepower 383-cubic-inch V-8 (the Hemi was optional) and was Dodge’s answer to Plymouth’s Road Runner.
