Pilot Whale
Pilot Whale, or Blackfish, a toothed whale related to the dolphin. The long-finned pilot whale is uniformly black; the short-finned pilot whale is black with a white patch on the chin. Pilot whales grow to a length of 25 feet (7.6 m). They swim in schools of up to several hundred members, sometimes following a leader in single file. Pilot whales sometimes beach themselves and lie stranded until they die.
The long-finned pilot whale is Globicephala melaena; the short-finned, G. macrorhyncus.
