Damselfish
Damselfish, the common name of a family of brightly colored marine fish. They inhabit coral reefs and rocky coastal regions of tropical waters. Damselfish are popular aquarium fish. Most species are less than six inches (15 cm) long.
The garibaldi inhabits the kelp beds off the coast of southern California. It is bright orange-red and is named for the 19th-century Italian patriot who led a military group known as the Red Shirts. Anemonefish are so called because they live among sea anemones, which the fish use as a place to hide from predators. This species is sometimes called clownfish because of its vivid orange and white markings. It is commonly found in the Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea. The blue chromis is found off the coasts of Florida, Texas, the Bahamas, and Brazil. The sergeant major, named for its vertical black and gold stripes, is common in the West Indies.
Damselfish belong to the family Pomacentridae. The garibaldi is Hypsypops rubicundus; anemonefish belong to the genera Amphiprion and Premnas; the blue chromis is Chromis cyaneus; the sergeant major, Abudefduf saxatilis.
