Jaeger

Jaeger, an arctic seabird. The adults of most species are about 21 inches (53 cm) long. They are blackish-brown or sooty-brown above, with whitish or grayish underparts. The bills are hooked, giving the birds a hawklike look. Jaegers are strong fliers and often pursue smaller birds, making them drop or disgorge their prey. They nest on rocky ledges or on tundras. Jaegers winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

The long-tailed jaeger is Stercorarius longicaudatus; parasitic, S. parasiticus; pomarine, S. pomarinus. All are of the family Laridae.
